– From the Eyebrow Up
From October 4th, 12 Indonesian artists from the Atap Alis artist's community in Jakarta, will exhibit a selection of woodcut prints at Galleria B in Turku (an industrial port in southwest Finland).
In Indonesia, a country where over 39 million people live in extreme poverty under poor governance and corruption while struggling with severe environmental issues, it is very common for artists to take a political stand through their art. Young artists often usethe print medium next to their main medium (painting, sculpture, installation, video etc…) because it is an affordable and easy way to produce, distribute and market their art.
The young artists of Atap Alis (translates 'from the eyebrow up') work together through mediums such as murals, posters and t-shirts to raise awareness about social and Environmental issues. They also work on a voluntary basis with street children in their local community by organizing print and paint workshops, as well as teaching themEnglish. All proceedings from work sold during the exhibition will go directly to the Atap Alis community, to help them continue the much needed work they do. T-shirts, especially designed for the exhibition by Finnish artist Sandra Nyberg, will also be sold to support the cause.
